Hii everyone!!!
Seven months ago, my boyfriend Jake and I moved in together for the first time.
It was supposed to be the best chapter of our relationship so far.
But... it almost turned into the worst chapter of our lives... because of the never-ending litter stench.
I thought surely not... the litter smell cannot be the reason for my break-up with my boyfriend.
After months of arguments, silence, and Jake pulling away every week, I eventually did find something that got rid of the litter stench... and saved my relationship.
But before I reveal what that one thing was, I need to tell you how I discovered it, because without it, the solution won't make sense.
So please bear with me for a few minutes. I promise to make it worth your while.
My name is Taylor and I'm 31 years old.
I work as an HR manager in a transportation company.
And I live in Trolley Square neighbourhood of Wilmington, Delaware with my boyfriend and 3 cats (Buffy, Travvis & Pookie), in an apartment that's honestly a little too small for 3 litter boxes.
All are spayed or neutered.
All healthy, and they're my little bundles of joy.
I wouldn't trade them for anything. Ever.
Which is exactly why what happened was so hard to swallow.
The first time my boyfriend (Jake) brought it up was maybe three weeks after we moved in.
He said it casually, almost like a joke:
"Babe, we gotta do something about the smell in here."
Now to be fair, he does have a sensitive nose... so I said I'd deep clean the boxes that weekend.
And I did.
It didn't help much. A week later, he brought it up again, less casual this time.
"Did you scoop today? It's really bad right now."
I told him yes, three times a day, same as always, my voice a little shakier than I meant it to be.
Then it started happening more often.
Small comments turning into actual arguments.
One night we went back and forth for almost an hour, both of us raising our voices a little, neither of us actually solving anything.
After that, I noticed him pulling away.
He started coming home later from the gym, taking longer routes, texting that he'd grab dinner on his own instead of eating with me.
I told myself it was fine. That we'd figure it out.... but then came that Tuesday night.
Nothing special about the day itself. We were just sitting on the couch after dinner, watching TV.
Jake muted the TV.
"Taylor, I need to talk to you about something."
I remember my stomach dropping instantly, because I knew what he wanted to talk about. That tone. That specific tone.
He then said... "I don't know how to say this but... I can't keep living like this."
"The smell. It's everywhere. It's in the couch, it's in our sheets, it's in my clothes when I leave for work, my colleagues comment about it."
I sat there frozen.
He kept going, and I could tell he'd been holding this in for a while, because it all came out at once.
"I love you. I do. But I dread coming home. I actually dread it, babe."
He said, "Every time I open the front door, a heavy wall of cat stench hits me right in the face."
Then he said something I don't think I'll ever forget.
"If this doesn't change, I don't think I can stay here. I don't want to say that. But I have to be honest with you."
I just sat there. I didn't cry in front of him. I just nodded and said "okay" shamefully.
But the second he went to bed that night, I sat alone in the living room, and it hit me all at once.
Four months. That's all it took to bring us here.
I thought about my cats (Buffy, Travvis, and Pookie) sleeping in the other room... completely unaware that their existence was somehow now a countdown clock on my relationship.
And for the first time, a thought crept into my mind that I was ashamed of the second I had it.
"Would it be easier if I got rid of my cats?"
I didn't sleep that night.
I was thinking about every version of the future I imagined with him, and how all of it was suddenly hanging on a smell I couldn't erase no matter what I did.
That was the moment I knew I had to fix it... for good.
So I did what any of us would do.
I started searching for answers.
